When you’re not using your computer, putting it into sleep mode helps to keep your hard drive from being needlessly accessed, which can wear it down over time. Sleep mode is also good for your hard drive: Hard drives are spinning disks that store your data and are one of your computer’s most delicate parts.Shutting down your computer at night gives it a chance to rest, which can help prevent unexpected failures. It’s more reliable: Computers are complex machines, and running them 24/7 makes them more likely to break down. It’s much more energy-efficient: A sleeping computer uses only a fraction of the power of a fully awake one, so you’ll save money on your electric bill. This means you can pick up right where you left off without restarting your computer. Faster resume: It allows your computer to enter a low-power state while retaining all of its current information. What Are the Benefits of Using Sleep Mode on a Computer? This reduces the wear and tear on your computer components and can help extend their lifespan. So, if you need to step away from your computer for a few minutes, Sleep mode is a good way to save power and reduce energy consumption.įurther, when in sleep mode, your computer’s display is turned off, the hard drive or SSD is powered down, and the fan stops spinning. You can easily wake your computer from sleep mode by pressing any key on the keyboard or clicking the mouse. Although sleep mode uses a small amount of power, it’s still less than starting up your computer from a completely powered-off state. When you’re done using your computer for the day, you may not want to shut it down completely. It is a power-saving state that allows your computer to quickly resume full-power operation (typically within seconds) when you want to start using it again. Sleep mode saves your open documents and applications in memory (RAM) and places your computer in a low-power state so you can quickly resume your work. It is important to know that in the case of Hibernation/Hybrid-Sleep, the boot/startup procedure should not be interrupted (by the power button or power failure) or the programs' session&data saved on swap-partition (by the 'hibernation' action) will be lost.Related posts: What Is Sleep Mode? The computer is sleep. In case of total power drain, the Hibernation capability is used: the machine is shut down but is able to restore all programs from swap upon startup. As long as power is not completely drained, only the 'Sleep/Suspend to RAM' capability is visible. It ensures all that is needed for the Hibernation procedure to work, but it doesn't shut down the machine instead, it suspends it to RAM (Sleep mode). Hybrid Sleep is not an intermediary state between Suspension/backup to RAM ("Sleep") and that to disk ("Hibernation"), but a double operation it simply does both. Putting the battery back and starting the machine from the power button, my multi-boot list became available (Windows etc.), and when booting Linux it all went just like in the case of hibernation (message with booting from dev/disk/.), my open unsaved document was available. At this point the machine was fully shut down, the LED was dead. As the laptop cable was disconnected, I have also removed the battery. At this point the LED beside the power button was blinking, like in Sleep mode. I have opened a text document, written something and, without saving the document, entered hybrid sleep with the command systemctl hybrid-sleep. In case of total battery drain when the machine shuts down completely: what happens with the hybrid-sleep state? I think the RAM data is lost, but is the HDD backup restored when the Linux system is started again?Īs I was expecting a quick answer which didn't came, I have subjected an older laptop to a rough test intended to provide the answer: I know that Hybrid-Sleep is an intermediary operation it doesn't shut down the machine (you cannot for example go to Windows in multi-boot) and the RAM is refreshed (like in "Sleep/Suspend to RAM") while data is also saved to the swap space of the HDD. (In case of multi boot, one may chose to use other systems like Windows before going back to the Linux, with no impact on the effectiveness of the hibernation procedure.) When the Linux system is started up again the session is restored from disk with all the open programs. In Hibernation, the session data active in RAM is saved on the HDD (I think swap partition is needed for this) and then the machine shuts down completely. I think that Sleep/Suspend to RAM is just saving session to RAM, therefore entering sleep and restoring very quickly, but in case of total battery drain the session is lost as the machine shuts down by power failure. And, there is a fundamental difference between the two. But, I was a proof point of successful schooling-not successful education. Looking back, my "success" as a student was largely defined by my test scores and had very little to do with building my own cultural competence and critical consciousness. I was a proof point-yes. Where was I in the curriculum? Where was my history and culture? Where was the connection between my background and experiences and what I was learning? What room was there for my peers and myself to identify, celebrate and leverage our knowledge, our cultures, our interests, our inherent brilliance? What space did we have to learn and talk about equity and inequity both inside our communities and in the world? What room was there to develop the skills and agency to critique our social contexts, to understand the histories and policies that were contributing to those realities? In other words, how was I developing and strengthening my roots? However, I was missing another category of knowledge and skills that was just as critical for my learning and development. Having access to these learning opportunities and being able to develop these skills was undeniably important. "I hesitate to say that it is automatically going to be safer, because any new technology that you introduce in the marketplace, somebody’s going to find a way to hack it," he said. The cardless feature should mitigate some risk, protecting a card's magnetic strip from potential thieves, Dix said, though it's no silver bullet. That technology may roll out as early as next year, Dix said. Patrick Dix, spokesman for Johnston-based Shazam, a member-owned payments processor and ATM network provider, said the company is working on a similar solution for its member banks. The answer: "They don’t want to be tracked by their parents, so therefore they’d rather use cash." 'Somebody's going to find a way to hack it' What difference does it make?'" she said. "I said, 'Why? In meeting with a group of Drake University students a few weeks ago, Codina said she couldn't believe the stronghold cash still wields over millennials' financial lives.Įven with continued innovations in mobile payments systems and the growth of peer-to-peer money transfer apps such as Venmo and PayPal, the students told her they still wanted easy access to ATMs. "Overall in the population, we’re still seeing a demand for cash and a demand for getting that cash where I need it." "We’re certainly not seeing any kind of decline yet in ATM usage," Codina said. While experts debate the technological significance of Wells Fargo's innovation, they agree that it underscores the relevance of cash and ATMs in the marketplace, even as mobile banking technology matures. Wells Fargo plans to take their ATMs a step further later this year, rolling out a Near Field Communication (NFC) option that will "read" NFC-enabled smartphones to complete transactions, along with a PIN. Plus, the new feature also allows customers to ditch their wallets and still have access to cash. Making the terminals more secure is a priority, given that ATM fraud rose more than 500 percent from 2014 to 2015, according to analytics firm FICO.īy removing the card from the transaction, the risk of skimmers on an ATM stealing a customer's information also drops, Codina said. To use an ATM without a card, customers use their smartphone to log into the bank's mobile app and request a one-time, eight-digit authentication code. They enter that code, along with their PIN, to make withdrawals or deposits the same way they would by inserting a card. "People carry their cellphones everywhere. They don’t carry purses." "I have a 16-year-old son who loses his debit card about every three weeks," said Marta Codina, Well's Fargo's Des Moines area president. The move is seen as one of both convenience and security - as well as a recognition that cash is still king in an increasingly digital society. But experts predict small and big banks alike will explore similar moves as mobile technology continues disrupting traditional banking behavior. Wells Fargo says it is the first large bank to offer a cardless feature, rolling it out last week to its 13,000 ATMs across the nation. Listen: Sons of Kemet, “My Queen Is Harriet Tubman”ġ77. Drawing on many musical heritages, “Harriet Tubman” also moves forward, its sound igniting the spirit of all future freedom fighters. And then there’s Hutchings’ own breathless solo, his staccato shrieks matching the rapidfire flow of grime. But UK sounds also bubble up on the track, from the punk sneer inherent in that title to the dubstep wobble in tuba player Theon Cross’ huffed frequencies. Meanwhile, do-it-yourself Tubman rubber stamps are perpetually out of stock, suggesting that many Americans might concur with Sons of Kemet and the British-born, Barbados-raised saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings’ bold declaration that “My Queen Is Harriet Tubman.” The unrelenting highlight of the band’s Impulse! debut, Your Queen Is a Reptile, “Harriet Tubman” unites African-American jazz and Afro-Caribbean soca. Treasury Secretary continues to balk at the rollout of a new $20 bill featuring abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Sons of Kemet: “My Queen Is Harriet Tubman” (2018) This is Frank’s gift, the ability to build worlds of meaning and emotion into a song that has the casual grace of a freestyle. Beneath it all, there’s a romantic ripple, too, as a relationship that seemed casual and disposable is revealed, almost shyly, to mean something more. Listen closely, and “Chanel” also reveals itself to be a meditation on masculinity, one that alternately embraces it, subverts it, and points out its absurdity. It’s all about Frank and the places his words can take you: a heated swimming pool in the hills, a Tokyo back alley, the first-class lounge at the Delta terminal. The piano chords are simple and translucent the beat ambles casually. There isn’t much to it in terms of melody or structure. “Chanel” is the first and best of them, capturing an artist in total command of his faculties as a singer, writer, and rapper. Listen: J Balvin / Willy William, “Mi Gente (Remix)” Īfter releasing Blonde in 2016, Frank Ocean spent the next year trickling out a series of singles that built upon that album’s fluid confidence. It remains a testament to pop music’s ability to push back against growing neo-nationalist fervor-there was no border, no wall, that could keep people from coming together and loving this song. Aided on the remix by Beyoncé, who audaciously tackles Spanish and ups the diva ante, “Mi Gente” became the first all-Spanish song to reach the top of Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart. His lines like “el mundo nos quiere” (“the world wants us”) transform the song into a universal call to the dancefloor, an embrace of solidarity and unification at a time of enormous worldwide polarization. No wonder “Mi Gente” was such a global, cross-culture sensation.īalvin worked with William to reinvent the source material, adding Spanish lyrics, chants, and ferocious Latin percussion. Much of what makes Colombian singer J Balvin’s “Mi Gente” sizzle-that audacious drumbeat, that insistent five-note vocal melody-is lifted from Mauritian-French singer Willy William’s 2017 track “Voodoo Song,” which itself reinterprets a sample from the Indian composer Akassh. J Balvin / Willy William: “Mi Gente (Remix)” (2017) But his actual relationship to such sources could be hard to read: Was Maus poking fun at music’s power to manufacture an emotional response, like when we find ourselves crying in the middle of a commercial, or celebrating its potential to offer us a fleeting moment of ecstasy, a glimpse of a world that is better than our own? Arriving at the end of 2011’s We Must Be the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves with the cathartic finality of perfectly curated exit music, this song-with its glittering harpsichord arpeggios, briskly pulsing bass, and grandiose allusions to borderless love-is the closest Maus has ever come to being a true believer. Like many of his lo-fi pop contemporaries in the early ’10s, reclusive Midwesterner John Maus pushed underground music forward by looking backward-rejecting digital studio techniques in favor of old drum machines and wonky synths, excavating the dramatic excesses of ’80s stadium pop and sentimental radio jingles as though they held clues to some hard-to-pinpoint generational subconscious. The later the model, the more plastic was incorporated onto the actual Victrola record player. You could find varying finishes, although oak Victrolas are usually the most expensive. The bases of most antique Victrolas are made of natural woods like mahogany or oak. On most of these antique Victrolas, modern-day vinyl “LP” records will not work. These records became brittle after pressing on them however, they were durable enough at the time, so long as you cared for them. Original Victrola record players used flat records made from a shellac-based compound. If you want to purchase a Victrola, you should make sure you’re buying it from a true phonograph specialist or have a specialist look at the item to confirm it is legitimate before purchase. Generally speaking, the older and rarer your Victrola is, the more expensive it will be. You’ll need to analyze what it’s made of, its signature “Victrola” stamp, and its overall design. Valuing your antique Victrola record player takes a few steps. Most antique Victrola record players are valued anywhere from $500-$5,000. The RCA continued to produce record players with the inscription “Victrola” or “RCA Victor” through the mid-1990s, which means there are many mislabeled gramophones that are not genuine Victrola antique record players. Most of the RCA’s products began to change the vinyl aspects of the record player into plastic, making many new record systems incompatible with those from the past. The selling of the Victor Company could be one of the reasons that the most popular makes and models are from 18. Initial record players were basic in their design, but by the early 1900s technology advanced, using more plastic compounds which reduced surface noise. The Victor Company was bought out in 1929 when its designs began to shift with changing technology. Some models have hidden sound horns, others have cranks, and the materials used have changed over the years. Since then, Victrola has produced many different models of record players under both the Victor and Victrola name. As a Mechromancer, being able to transfer my shield’s properties to my robot allows me to use shock, corrosive, or slag weaponry as is necessary to help my automaton one-shot enemies. The roid, spike, and nova damage make Deathtrap and the Haiku Hitman complete terrors at close range. Melee Zer0s and BFF Mechromancers can look to, and frankly, should have already been using the Hide of Terramorphous for their damage. Now for the other shields that you could possibly be using. If you do go with Gunpowder or Guerilla, then the use of Metal Storm and Duty Calls with a high damage/high ammo capacity neutral assault rifle will still make great use of The Bee’s amp damage. If your goal was survival, then your shield should have also reflected as much. If you were using The Bee with Axton’s Survival tree, then you were attempting to use the shield to make up for the damage loss by not going with Guerilla or Gunpowder. Discord's increased fire rate still works perfectly with The Bee. That said, the whole point of the Anarchy tree is to make use of Discord to keep one’s Anarchy stacks at a manageable level. Sorry, I’ll give it a shot in the near future.)Īnarchy Mechromancers took the biggest hit here, as the wide reach of the CC helped when the Anarchy stacks started getting too high to hit the broad side of a barn. (I love Harmony Sirens, but I’ve never played one for anything other than Res while keeping my full Cataclysm tree. Harmony Sirens weren’t building themselves for damage anyway, so I really don’t know what they were expecting. The elemental damage melts enemies as quickly as ever and a slight loss on bullet damage won’t affect much. Needless to say, I’m not exactly shedding a tear for the Salvadors of the world.Ĭataclysm Sirens should keep to using SMGs like the Hellfire or Moxxi's Good/Bad Touch. The high fire rate and infinite clip make use of the amp damage in a much more efficient manner than any shotgun.Īlso, Gunzerkers still have their Torgue glitch that produces more damage than anything else that still exists in the game. Gunzerkers and Assassins who wish to stick to the shield may want to swap their Conference Call out for the Infinity pistol, utilizing “I’m your Huckleberry”/ ”0ne Sh0t 0ne Kill”, respectively. SMGs and assault rifles, or even Vladof pistols will see the most use out of The Bee. The change in damage now makes the amp series of shields something more useful to single-shot guns with high fire rates. That means the most you’re ever going to get on a single shot is +42k-ish damage, making shotgun the worst type of weapon to use with amp shields after rocket launchers. The problem is the update also splits your amp damage amongst all of the projectiles in a single shot. We lost about ten thousand amp damage per shot, and a one second recharge delay increase. Overall, the actual statistical changes to The Bee are pretty inconsequential. Crazy, I know.įirst, let’s assess The Bee. Apparently, Gearbox made a number of other shields to make use of in situations where The Bee may have not been the best choice. Alternatively, we can look at the Bee for all of its current strengths and flaws, and come up with other shields to make use of. Obviously that’s not what GBX is aiming for with this update, but that is your prerogative. There’s always the option of being stubborn - sticking to single shot automatics or eating the damage loss while using the Conference Call. There are at least three more DLC episodes coming, and one-shotting enemies with any gun of your choosing (but most likely the Conference Call shotgun or Maggie pistol) isn’t an option anymore. Those of us who saw the writing on the wall (or I guess the twitter feed, as Randy Pitchford addressed the nerf weeks ago) have come up with new ways to mow our way through the game.
